Lindsey Strand-Polyak & Baroque Pottery
As a concert violinist, I’ve lived my life on a formal, public concert stage in front of large audiences. In my ceramic work, I create wheel-thrown pieces intended for smaller, more personal venues: kitchens and dining tables. I aim to bring just a little of the wildly indeterminate beauty of nature and chance into the controlled privacy of the home. My clay work is influenced not only by the natural riches of Whidbey Island, but by the cultural and culinary traditions of the Pacific Rim that I’ve grown up and lived alongside on the West Coast: the simplicity of a Japanese maple, the dynamic movement of a single brushstroke, the rustic comfort of Northern California craftsman potters, and the satisfaction of a large bowl of soup. In functional and decorative pieces, I attempt to create a sense of place, rooted in the clay foundation of my Pacific Northwest home.
I primarily work in wheel-thrown ceramics, with a focus on functional dinnerware. My forms are influenced by what I prepare in my own kitchen: pieces that speak to comfort, generosity and abundance, meant to be used. I began my clay journey 2021, fulfilling a long-held desire for another creative outlet beyond the performing arts when concert halls remained shuttered. I started studying wheel with Cara Jung (@CaraJung) on Whidbey Island, WA, and shortly joined the community of artists at the Whidbey Clay Center. In Los Angeles, I continued studies in wheel work with Robin Watts (@wotzworks) and dinnerware with Sharon Mann (@mannhandmade). I presented my first solo gallery show called “Clay Recital” at the Whidbey Clay Center in Fall 2022, and my work wa part of the University of Southern Mississippi’s “Cups of Contemplation” juried show in 2024. This past year I started the Whidbey Pottery Salon with Jill Lipoti (@jilllipoti), a free speaker series bringing clay artists together outside the studio.
