Monteverdi’s opera Poppea is one of the masterpieces of the early Italian Baroque. This updated version, imagined by Stage Director Theodore Deacon, places this ancient Roman story of seduction and murder in the 1920s in Mussolini’s Fascist Italy. Originally premiered by Early Music Seattle in the 2006-07 season under the direction of Theodore Deacon and Stephen Stubbs at Intiman Theater, Poppea garnered rave reviews as the first full-length Baroque opera performed on period instruments in Seattle.
