We invite you to attend an introductory class of Capoeira Angola, a Brazilian martial art that blends dance, acrobatics, and music presented by Silvio dos Reis. Capoeira is deeply rooted in African traditions. Originating in the 16th century, it was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil as a means of self-defense, disguised as a dance to avoid detection by colonial oppressors. You will learn the basics of the artform as you move to the rhythm of traditional instruments like the berimbau (a single-string percussion instrument), atabaque (drum), and pandeiro (tambourine). Limit of 15 participants, comfortable clothes suggested. Ticket link for registration.
